Jeff Hafley says he “can’t comprehend” how things between Aaron Rodgers and the Packers got this bad.
Mike Holmgren, the former coach of the Packers, would have handled the Aaron Rodgers issue differently, beginning with the 2020 NFL Draft selection of quarterback Jordan Love.
In a Friday radio appearance, Holmgren responded to the circumstances and clarified why his old club is to blame for its current tense relationship with Rodgers. Love, a standout player at Utah State, would have had early notice that the club was interested in him.
Holmgren stated on Friday on Chicago’s ESPN Radio, “I would bring [Rodgers] in; we’d sit down and not leave until we kind of had an agreement one way or the other.”
The Packers’ draft choice of Rodgers’ ultimate replacement is said to be the catalyst for the separation between the two players.
“I don’t believe they handled it very well. I would call him in and tell him how this would impact him. We must prepare for your retirement,” Holmgren remarked. “Although we must tend to the franchise, nothing will happen at this time. You are the person, the man. If he didn’t like it, then all of a sudden you find yourself in the predicament you’re in.
Holmgren, who led the Green Bay Packers to consecutive NFC titles and Super Bowl XXXI during one of their most successful runs as head coach from 1992 to 1998, understood that the league had changed and that players of Aaron Rodgers’ quality ought to be more involved in club decisions. The quarterback seemed to have become irritated with something in Green Bay.
Regarding the state of affairs, Holmgren, who oversaw Brett Favre’s heyday in Green Bay, declared, “It’s not good, that’s for sure.”
“It is inconceivable that there could be a connection like that developing between the starting quarterback and the coach, management, or decision-makers at this stage. I simply cannot fathom it. I’d not consent to that. It would not occur. However, it has now occurred.
Holmgren’s remarks coincide with the most recent information on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ upcoming divorce, which is that Rodgers allegedly informed Packers free agents that he would not be playing for the team in 2021.
According to The Athletic, Green Bay made Rodgers an offer to sign a new contract that would have made him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. Green Bay has stated that they have no intention of dealing its star quarterback. The publication was informed by sources, meanwhile, that money is not the main factor in the terrible rapport between Rodgers and Green Bay.
In a statement released on May 1, Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy addressed the matter, stating that the team and the three-time NFL MVP had a “problem.”
Murphy said that he personally visited Rodgers this summer to talk about the unrest with general manager Brian Gutekunst and coach Matt LaFleur. The announcement coincided withnother story claiming that Rodgers demands to leave Green Bay unless Gutekunst is sacked.
Rodgers hasn’t discussed the matter in public. His current Packers deal expires in 2023, but it’s unclear if he’ll play out the remaining years.
