Breaking News: Rory McIlroy makes a three-word plea to PGA Tour and LIV Golf leaders…

Rory McIlroy has called for change in golf, urging PGA Tour and LIV Golf leaders to finalize a deal ahead of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland. Despite being a four-time major champion, McIlroy isn’t the main attraction this week, as PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and LIV Golf chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan will play together in the pro-am, alongside Billy Horschel and Dean Burmester.

McIlroy, who was once a strong critic of LIV Golf, will also partner with Al-Rumayyan, marking a shift in golf’s landscape following a proposed merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. Talks have been ongoing, and McIlroy has emphasized the need for a swift resolution to unite the tours and have the best players competing together.

Speaking to BBC Northern Ireland, McIlroy expressed optimism, noting the symbolic importance of the event in the “home of golf” and calling for golf to become more global. He acknowledged the complexities involved but stressed that change is necessary to move the sport forward.

As a member of the PGA Tour’s transaction committee, alongside Tiger Woods and Adam Scott, McIlroy has been deeply involved in the merger negotiations. However, with the tournament underway, he’s likely to focus more on playing than on business talks with Monahan or Al-Rumayyan. McIlroy is playing with his father, Gerry, and will team up with LIV Golf star Louis Oosthuizen and Johann Rupert for the opening round at Carnoustie.
