SAN FRANCISCO Steve Kerr, the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, tested positive for COVID-19, the team revealed on Monday night.
He will not be on the bench for Monday’s Game 4 against the Memphis Grizzlies because he has complied with the league’s health and safety procedures.
Mike Brown, an associate head coach, will take over as head coach. Brown just agreed to become the next head coach of the Sacramento Kings.
“I want to send him my best, I actually just messaged with him,” Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said in reference to Kerr. “I hope he recovers quickly. Get some rest. I just want to make sure that he is doing okay because that is the current state of the globe; COVID is still widespread. Although I am aware of the awful timing and other circumstances, I hope he is still in a good mood.”
Prior to his positive test on Monday, Kerr had been donning a mask for a few days. He may or may not fly to Memphis on Tuesday with the Warriors in preparation for Wednesday’s Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals.
