Athletic Bilbao defeated high-flying Girona 3-2 on Monday, thanks in large part to two goals from Alex Berenguer. The result served as a wake-up call for the Catalans’ aspirations of winning La Liga.

Athletic took the lead in the second minute after Berenguer intercepted a pass from competitor Aleix Garcia, but Viktor Tsyhankov equalized in the 49th minute with a close-range shot.

But in the 56th minute, Berenguer scored again to give the locals the lead back, and four minutes later, Inaki Williams added another goal to the lead.

Girona tied the score with a close-range strike from Eric Garcia after Aleix Garcia’s free kick, but the home team held on to win.

Girona is still in second position in the rankings with 56 points, two ahead of third-place Barcelona and six behind leaders Real Madrid, after suffering their second straight league loss. Athletic, in fifth place, now has 49 points, one point behind Atletico Madrid, in fourth place.
