Given that Harry Tyrer has agreed to join Chesterfield on a season-long loan starting on July 1, there is still uncertainty regarding who will be Jordan Pickford’s Everton backup for the upcoming campaign.
Asmir Begovic, Pickford’s primary backup last season, turned down a new contract offer at Goodison Park. Andy Lonergan, the team’s third choice in 2022–2023—is still unknown to have accepted a new contract offer. Begovic spoke of “certain realities that I understand the club are in” in an exclusive interview with the ECHO last week.
Tyrer, a 21-year-old native of Everton who enrolled in the Blues Academy at the age of seven, will continue to grow with Paul Cook’s Spireites, who lost to Notts County in the play-off final on penalties and only missed out on promotion from the National League the previous season. The Crosby native had a fantastic 2022–2023 season while on loan at Chester FC. He made 55 appearances for the National League North team, maintained 21 clean sheets, and won the title of young player of the year.
“This loan move is another important step in Harry’s development, playing in a competitive league under a well-respected manager in Paul Cook,” stated Kevin Thelwell, the director of football at Everton. Our player development approach includes providing our young, bright players with crucial experience under the direction of James Vaughan, our manager of loan pathways. We are certain that Harry will continue to advance at Chesterfield.
