Sean Dyche is set to become Everton’s new manager, with his appointment expected imminently. Marcelo Bielsa, the former Leeds boss, was also in talks with the club’s board after being seen in London on Thursday. The Everton hierarchy aimed to appoint Frank Lampard’s successor by Friday.
Dyche has arrived at Everton’s Finch Farm training complex to finalize a two-and-a-half-year contract, indicating his imminent appointment. Bielsa, who was initially the top choice to replace Lampard, held discussions with Everton’s owner, Farhad Moshiri, but it seems Dyche has emerged as the preferred candidate.
While Bielsa impressed during discussions, it was believed he would require more time, likely until the summer, to shape the Everton team according to his preferences. In contrast, Dyche was seen as someone who could start immediately, given his familiarity with some Everton players and the stability he could bring to the team.
One player Dyche knows well is Michael Keane, whom he coached at Burnley. Keane’s future at Everton was uncertain, but with Dyche’s expected appointment, it’s likely he’ll remain at the club, as Dyche rates him highly.
The cost of bringing Bielsa on board was reportedly a significant factor. His coaching staff would have added considerable expenses to Everton’s budget, which the board found challenging to accommodate. Additionally, Bielsa’s negotiating style, which involves a large fee distributed among his coaching team, posed concerns for the Everton hierarchy.
Ultimately, Everton prioritized a manager with Premier League experience, leading them to favor Dyche for the role.
