Everton facing further punishment for breaking Premier League financial rules. Forest also charged.
Everton may be subject to yet another expensive fine for violating the Premier League’s financial regulations.
Following their violations of the competition’s sustainability and profitability policies, Nottingham Forest and Everton were both referred to an independent commission, the league announced on Monday.
The league’s regulations stipulate that clubs risk punishment if they lose more than 105 million pounds ($133 million) in three years.
This season, as part of a streamlined procedure, the teams may be penalized with a fine or a penalty of points.
Everton’s excessive spending during the three years leading up to the conclusion of the 2021–22 season has already resulted in a record 10-point deduction. The club has filed an appeal challenging the harshness of the penalty, which put the Merseyside team in jeopardy of relegation.
Everton, a premier division team since 1954, is presently one point and one position above the relegation zone in the rankings, in fourth-to-last place. Forest is four points above the bottom three in 15th place.
Forest’s accusation follows a 2022–2023 season in which the team made a historic 21 offseason acquisitions at an expense of $160 million, marking its first season back in the Premier League following a 23-year hiatus. In an effort to advance, it also made significant investments in the second-tier Championship.
The Premier League and Manchester City are engaged in a legal battle as a result of the league accusing the English and European champions of over 80 alleged financial rule violations between 2009 and 2018 and another 30 related to allegedly not cooperating with an investigation.
Because there are so many alleged violations in City’s case, the verdict isn’t expected for some months.
