According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Everton and Newcastle United are interested in signing Peterborough United centre-back Ronnie Edwards in the summer transfer window. The two Premier League clubs have submitted enquiries to secure the services of the English defensive prospect.
Ronnie Edwards has been one of the best young prospects in England in the last few years. A native of Harlow, he spent his formative years with Barnet before breaking into the first-team squad in 2019. However, the Englishman has seen his stock soar since joining Peterborough United in August 2020.
The 21-year-old has gone from strength to strength at Peterborough United in the last four years, establishing himself as one of the best players in the lower divisions of English football. Edwards has been a mainstay at the back for Peterborough United in recent seasons and turned out 55 times in the 2023/24 season, amassing nearly 5,000 minutes of game time while chipping in with two goals.
Ronnie Edwards’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known Premier League outfits. The latest update has revealed that Everton and Newcastle United are vying for the young English defensive prospect’s signature, with the two clubs submitting enquiries for him.
Everton’s interest in Ronnie Edwards is understandable. The Toffees are in a spot of bother over Jarrad Branthwaite’s long-term future, even though recent reports have claimed that Manchester United might walk away from the move for the Englishman. The Peterborough United prospect is thus a viable target for Everton.
As for Newcastle United, they have already signed one centre-back this summer by agreeing to a Bosman move with Lloyd Kelly. However, with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles on the sidelines for the first half of the 2023/24 season, the Magpies need another central defender.
With Everton and Newcastle United submitting enquiries to secure Ronnie Edwards’s services in the summer transfer window, a summer move might be on the cards. It will be interesting to see if the 21-year-old English defender finally arrives in the Premier League this year.
