With one of the worst cornerback rooms in the NFL, the Detroit Lions made it all the way to the NFC Championship game in 2023 and came dangerously close to winning the Super Bowl. The sixth-highest throwing yards per game were given up by the Lions. Since the season ended, the squad has frequently been associated with corners for those reasons. According to league sources who spoke with The Athletic, the Lions are getting two sixth-round picks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis in return for a 2024 third-round pick. Davis seems like a good fit for the Lions in terms of fit. Aaron Glenn, the defensive coordinator, like defenders who can play press-man coverage, and Davis meets that need. In man coverage for the Bucs the previous season, Davis allowed a passer rating of 75.1, a completion percentage of 60%, and a PFF grade of 68.8. He also did not give up a touchdown. He looks like an upside-down bump-and-run corner for a heavy-man scheme. The defense of Tampa Bay (which allowed Davis just 23.8 percent of coverage snaps in man last year) did not give him that chance.
Apart from his abilities, Davis has a wealth of experience as a starting linebacker for a solid Bucs defense. Furthermore, at just 27 years old, he might fit into Detroit’s long-term plans should they decide to keep Davis past the one-year contract he has left (he is owed $14 million in 2024).
