After 24 years of unmatched success with the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick just said goodbye to the team. The most successful head coach in NFL history thanked everyone in a moving speech, but he also made room for the highest-paid coach in US sports. Sean Payton of the Broncos has assumed the role in Coach Belichick’s absence.

Sportico just published its list of the highest-paid coaches in US sports, and three coaches—Bill Belichick, Pete Carroll, and Nick Saban—were removed from their respective positions. Now that Erik Spoelstra, Andy Reid, and Dabo Swinney have joined the list, Coach Reid and Coach Swinney are tied for last place with a $11.5 million yearly pay.

With an annual compensation of $18 million, Sean Payton is the highest-paid coach, followed by Gregg Popovich ($16 million). Erik Spoelstra and Sean McVay, who both make $15 million, are tied for third place.

Above Andy Reid and Dabo Swinney on the list are Kyle Shanahan ($14 million), Monty Williams ($13.1 million), Mike Tomlin ($12.5 million), and John Harbaugh ($12 million).

Sean Payton, the head coach who makes the most money presently, took on the mission of turning around the Broncos, but he had similar difficulties as his predecessor. Moreover, despite his experience, his leadership is clouded by dubious choices, timeouts, and sideline disputes.

The Broncos’ eight-year postseason drought was further prolonged. Now that Payton’s future with the organization is in doubt, the failing squad will continue to struggle in the AFC West.

Sean Payton is worth $35 million in total. After the 2021 NFL season, he first announced his retirement with a $9.8 million paycheck. But in 2023, he went back to coaching for the Denver Broncos. Under his current contract, he makes $18 million a year with the Broncos.

In 1988, Sean Payton started working as a collegiate football coach at San Diego State University. After making the move to the NFL in 1996 to teach quarterbacks for the Philadelphia Eagles, he progressively rose to fame.

What, though, elevated Sean Payton to the top of the coaching hierarchy? After taking over as head coach of the New Orleans Saints in 2006, his career took off. He oversaw an incredible metamorphosis that turned the once-struggling team into a powerful force.

The most notable accomplishment of Coach Payton was leading the Saints to their first-ever Super Bowl triumph in 2009. In addition to enhancing his reputation, the victory bolstered New Orleans’s morale in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
