In an uncommon move, former Denver Broncos head coach “returns to team in new role.”

Reportedly, Vance Joseph, the former head coach of the Denver Broncos, will rejoin the team as the defensive coordinator. This is a unique appointment that hasn’t happened in the NFL in a long time.

From 2017 to 2019, Joseph led the Broncos for two seasons before being sacked due to an 11-21 record that prevented him from making the playoffs in each of those seasons.

Following his time as head coach, he joined the Arizona Cardinals and went back to his previous position as defensive coordinator, which he had with the Miami Dolphins in 2016.

He spent four years with the Cardinals, and while the club wasn’t very successful during that time, some would argue that he did a good job in his capacity.

After being traded from the New Orleans Saints for a first-round selection, legendary NFL coach Sean Payton joined Russell Wilson on the Broncos.

This offseason, the Broncos lost their defensive coordinator when highly regarded coach Ejiro Evero signed a contract to play for the Carolina Panthers.

This opened up the position of defensive coordinator, and Joseph, realizing Payton would not be involved in the defense, has reportedly made the decision to return to the Broncos.

A former head coach joining a club in a less prominent capacity is an extremely uncommon move, but one that will be viewed as a favorable chance with a young, growing Broncos defense.

Joseph, who worked with Patrick Surtain II and other studs on Denver’s defense, has shown promise in his job in Arizona.

After trading quarterback Russell Wilson to the Broncos, he struggled in his debut season. However, Wilson has now assembled a good coaching staff to support him.
