Mike McCarthy declared he was leaving the team.

McCarthy will rejoin the Dallas Cowboys as head coach in 2024, according to a report released on Wednesday night by NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.

McCarthy and his staff conducted departure talks with players three days following the Dallas Cowboys’ devastating 48-32 wild-card defeat to the Green Bay Packers. However, McCarthy will not be leaving the team until the ’24 season, which will be his sixth with the team and the final one under his present contract.

Owner Jerry Jones released a statement outlining his choice:

“I think this squad is extremely near and capable of reaching our ultimate goals, and having Mike McCarthy as our head coach will be the best move forward for us. Maintaining the team’s development with Mike as our head coach will be very beneficial. In particular, Mike’s style of team leadership has resulted in several levels of success this season for both our team as a whole and individual players. As the Cowboys’ head coach with the best regular-season winning percentage ever, Mike will work closely with us to translate that success into achieving our postseason objectives. Mike’s career has undoubtedly shown excellent playoff success, and we are quite optimistic that it can continue.

Moreover, not just Coach McCarthy but all of us here suffered the defeat on Sunday. Our athletes. Our mentors. our main reception area. By myself. Accountability exists for our outcomes. I take responsibility for our outcomes. We examine and assess Coach McCarthy from a comprehensive viewpoint. I wholeheartedly support him as our head coach and his ability to help us achieve our goals, even if we’re all dissatisfied with the outcome on Sunday and with our postseason record.

“We will begin the process of reviewing and making decisions about everything that affects our team and roster. At this stage, we won’t be talking about any individual players, contracts, or free agents, but everything that affects our team and roster deserves our careful attention, which it will receive.

Pelissero of NFL Total Access pointed out that Jones is accustomed to reviewing things after a season concludes, and since returning to the regular season, Jones has not indicated that he would like to switch coaches.

As the Cowboys’ head coach, McCarthy is 42-25, with three consecutive 12-win seasons under his belt, including two NFC East crowns. The 60-year-old is the sixth Dallas head coach since Barry Switzer in 1995 to fail to get the team past the Divisional Round, though, as he is only 1-3 in the playoffs.

After Dallas’ defeat to the Packers on Sunday, that run of wins continues, but McCarthy will have one more chance to help Dallas move beyond its divisional obstacle.

Questions remain, nevertheless, over the staff.

Numerous teams with open head coaching positions have expressed interest in hiring the team’s defensive coordinator, Dan Quinn. In 2023, McCarthy also assumed the role of offensive coordinator.
