Preseason rarely tells the full story, but Dallas Cowboys fans can’t help but be at least a little concerned following the first two games under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. The Cowboys have lost both contests, but their second game was particularly unnerving. The reason? The performance of Joe Milton, Dak Prescott’s backup quarterback.
Milton was fine in the first preseason game, although his 4.9 yards per attempt was rather underwhelming, as was the interception. But in the second contest, the wheels came off to a shocking extent. He threw a terrible interception, took a very bad safety and only completed 50% of his passes for 122 yards. Prescott didn’t play, but he looked perturbed on the sidelines.

As for the head coach, Schottenheimer came out to defend Milton in the postgame press conference. He attributed Milton’s poor performance to the offense struggling as as a whole.
“I wouldn’t say I’m concerned. We didn’t get in a rhythm offensively… It wasn’t just Joe.”
While that’s certainly true, the job of a quarterback is to elevate less talented players through his own play. Milton didn’t do that, and fans are already beginning to wonder what the Cowboys saw in him. And it has them concerned for a situation where Prescott goes down with an injury.
