Club rejects transfer bid for Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and West Ham target.
After turning down proposals for Ronnie Edwards this month, Peterborough United’s director of football, Barry Fry, insists the club will only transfer the player to Aston Villa at the correct price.
One of the most sought-after players not in the Premier League is Edwards. Despite just being 20 years old, he already has 121 senior football games under his belt and is highly regarded. Darragh MacAnthony, his owner, thinks that eventually, the 12-time England under-20 international will fetch a price tag of between £60m and £70m.
A fight for promotion is underway at Peterborough as players led by Darren Ferguson compete for a spot in the championship. With only a few days left, they have made their position clear to potential suitors for Edwards and Company after having a number of proposals for their plethora of young talent turned down.
To Peterborough, Fry stated, “The chairman deserves praise for his outstanding performance.
“We have been getting a lot of bids for lots of players, and he’s turned each one down.”Although the club would have received millions for them, we feel that this season offers the best potential to win League One, so we intend to retain this team together.”
Fry mentioned Edwards in particular and stated that if a club were to reach their valuation, they would be willing to sign Edwards. Crystal Palace has already turned down three proposals, and the League One team is holding fast to their asking price. There are rumours that West Ham is also very interested.
Earlier in the month, it was reported that the Posh were demanding £10 million. With its business strategy centered around selling young players and using the proceeds to reinvest in the team, Peterborough is reluctant to lose one of their most valuable assets, National League club Barnet, due to a 50% sell-on clause in the deal. If he is loaned back for the balance of the 2023–24 season, Peterborough might be willing to sell him for less.
“Financial fair play remains an issue for many clubs, which may be good news for us,” Fry continued. “However, should a club get to our valuation, we will honor our word to Ronnie Edwards.”
To be fair to Ronnie, though, neither he nor his representatives are putting any pressure on him to flee. When he had a different agency and West Ham came in for him in the summer, that wasn’t the case.
“Ronnie is a fantastic young man and athlete. He has now participated in 120 games for us, and he continues to improve.
“He definitely deserves the opportunity to play for a premier club.”
