sadness and injustice his departure from is lamented leaving a significant void that will be sorely felt by the club…..

Jake O’Brien’s decision to leave Crystal Palace for Lyon seems to have been a wise one, considering the opportunities he’s now receiving at one of France’s top clubs. Despite never making a senior appearance for Palace, his successful loan spell at RWD Molenbeek in Belgium likely caught the attention of Lyon’s scouts.

O’Brien’s explanation for leaving Palace suggests a desire for a new challenge and an opportunity to prove himself at a higher level. Lyon, despite their current struggles, represent a significant step up for the young defender.

For Crystal Palace, O’Brien’s departure represents a chance to recoup a fee for a player who hadn’t yet featured for their first team. With the likes of Joachim Andersen and Marc Guehi forming a solid partnership at the back, and the arrival of Rob Holding, O’Brien’s opportunities at Palace would likely have been limited.

It will be intriguing to see how O’Brien progresses at Lyon and whether he can establish himself in Ligue 1. Given the circumstances of his departure, it seems there are no hard feelings between the player and the club, and both parties will likely be supportive of his development.

O’Brien is now getting opportunities to play at one of the biggest clubs in France, whilst Crystal Palace pocketed around £1m for a player who had never made an official appearance. The defender was highly unlikely to break the partnership of Joachim Andersen and Marc Guehi at the back, as summer signing Rob Holding has found out the hard way, and his career may have stagnated should he have chosen to stay in Palace’s reserves. It will be interesting to follow his progress at Lyon as he continues to develop, but given the circumstances of his departure, that a somewhat unexpected offer came with chances at Palace Limited, there will be no hard feelings from either side over O’Brien should he end up succeeding in Ligue 1.
