In the event of Fernandes being ruled out, McTominay either missing out or not being deemed fit enough to start and Mount being overlooked, Ten Hag could task Mainoo with playing slightly higher than usual. The 19-year-old has demonstrated his hunger and desire to get forward with his progressive style of play.
Of course, Mainoo is not an out-and-out attacking midfielder by trade, nor is he likely to be transformed into one in the long term, but if Ten Hag is short on options and is not willing to deploy Mount, the youngster might get a shot at a different role. Should that happen, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen could sit deeper and support him.
In truth, it could all hinge on Evans’ availability. If he fails to make the cut and Casemiro is tasked with starting in defence again, Mainoo will almost certainly have to operate deeper to provide control.
After making six substitute appearances since returning from a long-term injury lay-off in March, Mason Mount will be desperate to start at Selhurst Park in the event of Fernandes missing out. He has started just four league matches since joining the club last summer and will be determined to end the season as strongly as possible.
Fernandes’ possible absence will leave a massive hole in the XI that will need plugging, and Mount’s experience and capabilities as a creator could stand him in good stead to step into the Portuguese’s shoes.
