Cardiff City defeated Coventry City at home thanks to two own goals from Liam Kitching, ending their hopes of qualifying for the Championship play-offs.
Ellis Simms, a striker for Coventry, put the home team ahead with a goal after turning in Milan van Ewijk’s low cross, his 11th in seven games.
Before halftime, Kitching equalized for Cardiff, slamming the ball into his own net while Cardiff’s Josh Bowler applied pressure at a corner.
Then, following the interval, a cross from Bowler veered past the unlucky Kitching and ended up in the net.
With six minutes remaining, Haji Wright believed he had equalized for Coventry, but his header was flagged offside.
The Sky Blues remain seventh in the Championship league as Coventry’s three-game winning streak came to an end. They lost the chance to cut the four-point deficit with sixth-place Norwich, who suffered a defeat at Leicester earlier in the day.
Cardiff’s amazing comeback from losing back-to-back league games has kept them in 11th place.
Before the match, not many would have thought Erol Bulut’s team could win at Coventry, but they rallied admirably to overcome Mark Robins’ play-off chasers.
Simms, who scored more goals in all competitions in 2024 than any other player in the top four English divisions, has been a key component of Coventry’s recent good play. However, Jamilu Collins blocked Simms’ early goal-bound attempt.
