Johann Berg Gudmundsson injury report from Vincent Kompany.
Due to an injury sustained early in Burnley’s loss to Manchester United, forward Johann Berg Gudmundsson is anticipated to be sidelined for Tuesday’s EFL Cup match.
Starting the encounter for the Red Devils, the 32-year-old was on the right side of the offensive trio behind striker Zeki Amdouni, who scored in the Clarets’ previous match in a tie with Nottingham Forest.
In the first leg of Burnley’s 2023–24 season, Gudmundsson was starting for the fourth time in a row. Earlier in the month, he had made appearances from the bench in Premier League games against teams like Tottenham Hotspur and Forest.
Gudmundsson was substituted by Mike Tresor, a Genk loanee, after just 18 minutes of play despite the hosts’ bright start at Turf Moor.
During his post-match press conference, Burnley manager Vincent Kompany gave an update on the midfielder’s condition and expressed optimism that the problem wouldn’t keep the player out of the starting lineup for too long
I hope it is just cramps or a little bit of tiredness in his muscle,” said Kompany when questioned about the injury to Gudmundsson following the full-time whistle in Lancashire.
Although the Burnley boss did not specific the type of injury, it is understood that the 32-year-old had strapping applied to his left calf as he watched the remainder of the match from the bench alongside his teammates.
The rest of the game in Lancashire saw the hosts dominate possession but ultimately end up empty handed due to a moment of quality from Bruno Fernandes, who fizzed a controlled volley past James Trafford from a long-range Jonny Evans pass.
It is expected that Gudmundsson will miss out on his side’s trip to Salford City in the third round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, with Kompany set to make wholesale changes to the XI that started against Erik ten Hag’s team.
In the cup match at The Peninsula Stadium, players Jacob Bruun Larsen and Jay Rodriguez might start as the Clarets attempt to guarantee their spot in the competition’s round of 16.
Let’s turn our attention to the Premier League. After five games, Burnley is currently ranked 19th in the top division, having only earned one point since moving up from the Championship.
Gudmundsson’s availability for the Clarets’ league trip to Newcastle United next Saturday is still unknown. Eddie Howe’s Magpies are coming off an 8-0 thumping of Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
The Icelandic international moved from Charlton Athletic to Turf Moor in the summer of 2016, and since then, he has played in more than 200 games while scoring 13 goals.
