Burnley have secured the signing of 19-year-old defender Hamzat Balogun following his exit from Championship rivals Watford.
The Clarets, currently positioned third in the table after six matches, continue to strengthen their squad, including outside the regular transfer window. Balogun has been added to Burnley’s U21 side after impressing during a trial period, and he has signed a contract running until next summer.
Balogun, who has previously been part of the youth setups at both Manchester United and Watford, is determined to make an impact at Burnley.
Released by Watford over the summer, he joined Burnley’s U21s on trial, even participating in their Professional Development League victory over Bristol City. Speaking to the club’s media, Balogun expressed his excitement:
“I’m happy to be here and can’t wait to get started. My goal is to work my way into the team and play as much as possible.”
Although most of his experience has been at the youth level, Balogun gained senior playing time during a loan stint at non-league side Bedford Town.
Now focused on his development with Burnley’s U21 squad, he hopes to secure a longer contract with the club. “The team plays good football, and I like the patterns of play.
In my position, they like to get the full-backs involved,” he noted.
Originally from Manchester, Balogun began his football journey at Manchester United’s pre-academy before moving to Watford, where he signed his first professional contract last summer.
Mainly a right-back, he offers versatility, having played across the defense, in midfield, and on the wings, making him a valuable addition to Burnley’s academy.
