New York’s ORCHARD PARK (AP) — Jim Salgado, the safeties coach for the Buffalo Bills, was let go, according to a source who spoke with The Associated Press on Thursday.
The source granted permission to speak anonymously to the AP because the Bills have not made the decision official. The termination was initially reported by ESPN.com.
Salgado just finished his first season coaching safeties and his sixth season with Buffalo. Prior to being promoted to managing the nickel cornerback position in 2018, he began his career with the team as a defensive assistant in 2017.Salgado was fired a few days after the Bills’ season came to an end on Sunday when they lost to Cincinnati 27-10 in the playoff divisional round. Additionally, it comes after a year in which injuries reduced Buffalo’s depth at safety, the most prominent of which being the cardiac arrest of Damar Hamlin on January 2 in Cincinnati, which required on-field resuscitation. Hamlin is still recovering, and he was well enough to go to Buffalo’s most recent game.
After getting hurt in Week 2, veteran starter Micah Hyde underwent surgery to repair a herniated disk, thus Hamlin was starting in his stead. Conversely, Jordan Poyer, the starter, played through a variety of injuries for most of the season.
During his end-of-season news conference on Monday, coach Sean McDermott declined to discuss any possible staff changes, citing the need for further time for review. Although McDermott did not address his secondary, he did express his dissatisfaction with Buffalo’s defensive line performance, particularly in light of pass rusher Von Miller’s season-ending knee injury suffered in November.
After finishing the regular season with a 13-3 record, matching a single season record for wins, and winning the AFC East for the third time in a row, Buffalo’s season came to an abrupt end.
