Brighton has appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager, signing a four-year deal. De Zerbi, the former manager of Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk, finalized terms to succeed Graham Potter, who recently left for Chelsea. The 43-year-old met with the club’s officials before formally accepting the position. Due to the Queen’s funeral, his introduction to the media will take place on Tuesday afternoon.
De Zerbi’s tenure at Shakhtar ended in July due to the conflict in Ukraine, where the team was leading the league before the season was halted. Brighton’s owner, Tony Bloom, expressed his excitement about De Zerbi’s appointment, praising his style of play and tactical approach. Brighton’s management highlighted De Zerbi’s success in Italy and Ukraine, particularly his achievements with Sassuolo and Shakhtar, and emphasized his fit with the club’s culture and technical requirements.
De Zerbi’s previous managerial experiences include leading Sassuolo to eighth-place finishes in Serie A and winning the Ukrainian Super Cup with Shakhtar. He inherits a Brighton team that is currently performing well, sitting fourth in the Premier League. His first match in charge will be against Liverpool after the international break, followed by a home game against Tottenham.
