Breaking News: Brandon Royval anticipates a title shot next and…

Brandon Royval has solidified his position as a top contender and is now eyeing a title shot. On Saturday, “Raw Dawg” earned his second consecutive win with a thrilling split decision over Tatsuro Taira in the UFC Vegas 98 main event. In a competitive 25-minute battle, Royval’s experience helped him secure the victory.|

Since his February loss to UFC flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja, Royval has defeated previously unbeaten Taira and two-time champion Brandon Moreno, putting him on the cusp of another championship opportunity. If given the chance, Royval promises a more aggressive performance this time.

“I’m going all out,” Royval said in the post-fight press conference. “I trust my pace, my cardio. A fifth-round Raw Dawg is dangerous. If I face Pantoja again—maybe I shouldn’t reveal my strategy—but I’m going after him. I played it too safe last time. I’m coming in guns blazing.”

In his fight against Pantoja eight months ago, Royval lost a unanimous decision after an unusually cautious performance. Prior to that, he was known for his relentless aggression, with 12 of his first 16 wins coming by knockout or submission, along with multiple Fight of the Night bonuses (he earned another against Taira).

Since debuting in the UFC in 2020, Royval has consistently fought top-ranked competition. With wins over several top-5 flyweights, he believes he has earned a title shot.

“I don’t see how I don’t get a title shot next,” Royval said. “I’ve beaten the top 5 of the division. I earned my way here. I’ve taken short-notice fights and just defeated the hottest prospect in the division. I’m ready for a title shot, and I’ll be the backup for the Dec. 7 title fight.”

On Dec. 7, Pantoja will defend his title against UFC newcomer Kai Asakura at UFC 310. Asakura, a standout from Japan’s RIZIN promotion, holds notable wins over Kyoji Horiguchi and Bellator’s Juan Archuleta.

Royval respects Asakura’s talent and believes he could potentially dethrone Pantoja, but he wouldn’t be surprised if Pantoja retains the belt, setting up a third fight between them.

“I’ve been following Kai Asakura, and he’s exciting,” Royval said. “He brings a lot to the division, and he could take out Pantoja. But if Pantoja grapples him, it could be over. The fight starts on the feet, though, so anything can happen.”
