Breaking news blue jays head coach just announced his departure due to….

Changes are coming for a team that ended the brief postseason in frustration, but there won’t be a rock of dynamite to blow up the Blue Jays coaching staff for 2024.

Carlos Febles has been hired to take manager John Schneider’s position as third base coach, succeeding the retiring Luis Rivera, the team said on Tuesday. Additionally, by changing Don Mattingly’s role, general manager Ross Atkins has made a step to address the team’s at-bat problems. In 2023, Mattingly—who is currently the Jays’ bench coach—will have a more comprehensive position as offensive coordinator.

Although Guillermo Martinez will continue to teach the team’s batters, Mattingly is anticipated to be more hands-on in the day-to-day activities of working with hitters.

The actions undoubtedly give insight into Atkins’ thinking going into the off-season, suggesting he isn’t going to lose heart following an 89-win campaign that ended in disappointment with a two-game elimination from the postseason for the second year in a row.

However, it also makes it quite evident that the team understands that some adjustments to the dugout in general and its strategy at the bat in particular are required.

That strategy makes some sense, despite the outcry after the team’s lackluster postseason exit—a two-game sweep at the hands of the Minnesota Twins. But it does make it more pressing to deliver success right now in a 2024 season where expectations would be high given the reAsThe team has a solid core, especially in the pitching staff, and Atkins is obviously going to stick with the assumption that the offense can be improved within. In the end, little adjustments made by the coaching staff do not signal panic.

This takes us full circle to Mattingly, who has been linked to several teams—most notably the Milwaukee Brewers—as a potential manager. Although Mattingly worked in the batting cage and showed interest in working with the offense in 2023, his new position will make him an important voice in that regard.

After serving as the Boston Red Sox organization’s third base coach for the previous five seasons, Febles, who has spent 17 years there, is moving to the American League East.
