Following Bill Belichick’s departure, John Harbaugh of the Ravens climbs the NFL longevity rankings.
Eight clubs, or 25% of the league, are without a head coach as a result of a hectic, if not fatal, week among NFL head coaches. For the sixteenth season running, the Ravens have remained calm amid the tumult, completely and justifiably satisfied with head coach Harbaugh’s direction.
The New England Patriots announced on Thursday that head coach Bill Belichick would not serve a quarter of a century; the two sides parted ways after Belichick’s 24th season (and fifth without Tom Brady) ended with just four wins on his respective ledgers. This latest departure from the headset brotherhood has left a profound emotional impact on the rest of the league.
After hanging up his Patriots sweatshirt for the last time, Harbaugh now owns the second-longest active tenure of any head coach in the NFL with his current team. Belichick’s exit gives Harbaugh another milestone in longevity. Ironically, Harbaugh is only one year behind Pittsburgh’s Mike Tomlin, his nemesis in the AFC North.
The head coach position has seen very minimal change in Baltimore overall; in fact, only three individuals have held the position since the team’s formal founding in 1996. After overseeing Charm City football for three seasons under the late Ted Marchibroda, Brian Billick took charge for nine seasons, including a championship run following the 2000 season.
By winning 160 games and going on his own Super Bowl run in 2012–13, Harbaugh has continued that legacy of excellence. Currently, among head coaches who have remained with one club throughout their careers, Harbaugh is the fourth most successful in NFL history, trailing only Tom Landry (250, Dallas), Chuck Noll (193, Pittsburgh), and Jimlin (173).
The Ravens, under Jim Harbaugh, were the only club in the AFC to come close to ending Belichick’s dominating two-plus-decade tenure in Foxborough. Despite his 5-7 record versus Belichick and Co., he only lost one game, and all of the others were due to a single possession.
