He is without a doubt the world’s best badminton player and the successes on the court are waiting to happen.
However, that is not the only place where things are going for Viktor Axelsen. Privately, things have also developed.
The defending world champion is married to Natalia Koch Rohde.
He confirms this to BT after he played his way through to the third round at the Badminton World Championships on home soil.
“Yes, we are married,” he says and continues:
“We haven’t had a big wedding yet, that will come after the Olympics. But yes, we are husband and wife.’
Viktor Axelsen and Natalia Koch Rohde have known each other since 2011, but only officially broke up as lovers in 2018.
Together, the couple have daughters Vega, who was born in October 2020, and daughter Aya, who was born in October last year.
It was in an interview with TV 2 Sports where he first referred to his longtime girlfriend Natalia Koch Rohde as his wife.
Viktor Axelsen has told BT how important time with his family has been, while he has been very successful on the badminton court.
“I have been good at taking a week off here and there so that we could spend time together as a family. The small breaks are crucial. Also, for my motivation for the game. Because you are really tired after week-long runs with many tournaments,’ explained Viktor Axelsen.
Viktor Axelsen advanced to the third round in superior style when he beat French Christo Popov 21-6 and 21-8 in the Royal Arena on Tuesday evening.
A victory that suited the Dane, who had expected a difficult match.
“I felt really comfortable in there and I don’t think he did. The last two matches have been really, really close, so I am happy and satisfied here after a relatively quick victory,’ says the Danish badminton star.
Now a rest day awaits on Wednesday and the world number one has also already planned it.
“I can train, keep it straight and relax a bit. And then I can see our children, spend time with them and drink a coffee with Natalia,’ he says.
