Sad News: Atlanta Braves head coach just suspended his player due to…

Roger McDowell, the Braves’ coach, is banned for two weeks.

Major League Baseball on Sunday banned Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell for two weeks without pay for offensive remarks and gestures he made toward fans before an AT&T Park game.

The Braves placed McDowell on administrative leave on Friday; the ban is effective as of that date. In addition, he received an undisclosed fine for the incident on April 23.

In addition to having to go through sensitivity training, McDowell will have to personally apologize to Justin Quinn and his family, the fans who were impacted.

In a statement, Commissioner Quinn stated that being insensitive to other people “just cannot and will not be accepted.”

Selig stated, “I hope this situation will be used to improve public understanding of the necessity of sensitivity to others. I believe that Mr. McDowell is quite sorry about his actions.”

Before the April 23 game, Quinn claimed to have seen McDowell question three men, “Are you guys a homo couple or a threesome?” as he and his wife were in the stands. Quinn said that McDowell used a bat and his hips to make obscene sexual gestures and that the coach threatened him when Quinn objected.

According to the commissioner’s office, McDowell apologized on Wednesday and requested to apologize to Quinn and his family personally.

McDowell released a statement saying, “I understand the judgment reached today by the commissioner.” “I am sorry for what I did, and I will personally apologize to Mr. Quinn and his family. Additionally, I would want to publicly and sincerely apologize to San Francisco’s supporters.”

Pitching for the Yankees: Right-hander Phil Hughes (dead arm) will see doctors in St. Louis today to find out whether he has thoracic-outlet syndrome, a blood flow condition that may be the reason for Hughes’ decline in velocity. The 36-year-old right-handed starter, Kevin Millwood, chose not to renew his contract with New York if he was not called up by Sunday. He made three minor-league starts and finished 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA.

Injuries: After David Freese was struck by a pitch and shattered a bone in his left hand, the Cardinals are searching for a pinch-hitter to start at third base. The Dodgers optioned Kenley Jansen to Double-A Chattanooga and recalled reliever Hong-Chih Kuo (back strain) from the 15-day injured list. On Sunday, Kuo allowed four earned runs in one-third of an inning during the Padres’ 7-0 defeat over Los Angeles. Victor Martinez, a catcher-designated hitter for Detroit, will begin a Triple-A rehab assignment today.
