Following this summer, the Braves will regret trading three players.
The Braves are fortunate to have an excellent lineup and a mostly solid defensive lineup, but if there’s one thing they still lack, it’s a great left fielder. Although Jarred Kelenic joined from the Mariners, Vaughn Grissom and he are still anticipated to share time there. The Braves may have explicitly sought Kelenic because they believed he wouldn’t hold down the position on a daily basis, giving Grissom more time to grow; if that wasn’t the case, they may have looked at Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Gurriel had an All-Star season and a breakthrough playoff performance before resigning from the Diamondbacks after three years and $42 million.
In addition to being a superior outfielder, Gurriel’s bat would be more suitable for the Braves’ powerful lineup. This season, he hit a career-high 24 home runs and 35 doubles, matching Braves doubles leader Ronald Acuña Jr. It would have been a significant blow to the Diamondbacks as well to steal Gurriel away from a possible postseason rival.
