The Miami Dolphins made the unexpected decision to fire head coach Brian Flores following their season-ending victory over the New England Patriots. Despite producing a nearly .500 record of 24-25 over three seasons, Flores fell short of leading the team to the playoffs.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross cited the lack of expected progress in the 2021 season as the primary reason for Flores’ dismissal. While the Dolphins experienced a late-season surge with a seven-game winning streak, they narrowly missed securing a postseason berth.
Reports suggest that tension and frustration between Flores and general manager Chris Grier played a significant role in the decision. Ross ultimately sided with Grier, choosing to part ways with Flores despite initially selecting him to guide the Dolphins through a challenging rebuilding phase.
Flores faced difficulties with roster changes initiated by Grier, including trades involving key players like Laremy Tunsil and Minkah Fitzpatrick. The team’s struggles were further exacerbated by uncertainties at the quarterback position, with Tua Tagovailoa facing challenges in his development and trade rumors involving Deshaun Watson.
Despite a promising late-season turnaround in 2021, the Dolphins’ failure to secure a playoff spot ultimately led to Flores’ departure, marking the end of his tenure with the team.
