Pittsburgh While some may view the Pittsburgh Steelers’ extensive quarterback room as a strength, others see it as a potential catalyst for a quarterback controversy. The Steelers boast the deepest quarterback room in the NFL.
Ryan Clark, a former defensive back for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is among many who thinks that backup Justin Fields can and will eventually push starter Russell Wilson for playing time because to the younger Fields’ ability to further raise Pittsburgh’s ceiling. Additionally, Clark expressed some skepticism regarding Wilson’s ability to lead this club.
Clark remarked, “I just think that eventually Justin Fields is going to get his opportunity to play, get his opportunity to start,” on the All Things Covered podcast. “How long is Russell Wilson going to be the solution? They’ll need to determine who their quarterback of the future is, and Justin Fields provides the solution to many of their issues. But if you limit yourself to a “good enough” Russell Wilson, you won’t see that he’s that solution.”
According to Clark, the Steelers would even prefer it if Fields overtakes Wilson in the depth chart and establishes himself as the legitimate starter.
“I feel like if you’re the Pittsburgh Steelers, it has to be what you want to happen,” Clark stated. “You have to hope that the more gifted, younger player will eventually start. The difficult aspect is that it’s possible Russell Wilson never performs poorly enough to be the starter.”
According to Clark, Fields can provide the offense a dynamic playmaking quality that Wilson just cannot match. There’s a difference between maybe good and maybe great, and Clark wants to take the player with the bigger potential.
“There’s going to have to come a time in the season where Russell Wilson is playing solid football, where the team is playing good football and you say, ‘I want great quarterback play,'” Clark stated. “‘I want dynamic quarterback play and I want a team that’s playing better than good football.'”
