Keefe expressed his disappointment in the team’s immaturity throughout the game, attributing it to both experienced players and rookies. Despite missing key players like Mitch Marner and Morgan Rielly due to injuries and facing a stellar goaltending performance from Jake Allen of the Devils, Keefe refused to make excuses for his team’s subpar showing.
Particularly, Keefe didn’t spare criticism for goaltender Joseph Woll, the third and fourth lines, and individual players like Bobby McMann. He also pointed out the failure of the team’s leaders, singling out captain John Tavares for not setting a good example. Keefe lamented the team’s lackadaisical habits, numerous turnovers, and defensive lapses, indicating a general breakdown in focus and execution.
Despite a strong start in the first period where they outshot the Devils significantly, the Maple Leafs’ performance deteriorated rapidly as the game progressed. They allowed Jersey to capitalize on their mistakes, leading to a disappointing 6-3 loss at home. Keefe’s frustration was evident, as he felt his team failed to execute the game plan and let their standards slip, especially considering the playoff implications of such performances.
