The Miami Dolphins have signed former Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer to a one-year contract, as agents Drew Rosenhaus and Kyle Lincoln revealed to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday.
After battling numerous injuries throughout the 2022 season, Poyer, who turns 33 next month, started 16 regular-season games for the Buffalo Bills as a captain in 2023. On March 6, as part of cost-cutting efforts, he was released.
As the closest defender in coverage with at least 50 targets from 2021 to 2022, Poyer topped in passer rating allowed, enabling opponents to complete only 49% of throws. Poyer’s coverage efficiency drastically decreased the previous season, allowing opponents to complete 73% of their throws.
After considering his options in free agency, he re-signed with the Bills during the previous offseason on a two-year contract. He first signed with Buffalo in 2017, the team’s first season under head coach Sean McDermott. He spent the next seven seasons in the secondary as a mate to safety Micah Hyde, who also signed with Buffalo in 2017.
According to Elias Sports Bureau, the pair has started the most games together (92) at safety since 2017.
Poyer was selected in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles from Oregon State. He played for the Cleveland Browns for a portion of the 2013 and 2014–16 seasons. Over the course of 11 NFL seasons, he has amassed 24 interceptions, 54 passes defensed, 12 sacks, 9 forced fumbles, and 806 tackles.
