If the Ohio State board of trustees gives its permission on Thursday, Ohio State coach Ryan Day is anticipated to receive a two-year contract extension that will extend through the 2028 football season. This will put him among the top five highest-paid college football coaches in the nation.
A news release from the school states that Day’s total remuneration will rise from $7.6 million to $9.5 million yearly, with a basic salary of $2 million annually. According to a school official, Day will begin receiving $9.5 million on July 1. This represents a seven-year, $66.5 million contract that also includes a two-year extension. More than $9 million is earned yearly by coaches Nick Saban of Alabama, Lincoln Riley of USC, Brian Kelly of LSU, and Mel Tucker of Michigan State.
Day joined the Buckeyes on December 4, 2018, and since then, he has guided them to a 34-4 record, including a 23-1 streak versus Big Ten opponents. In the regular-season finale of the previous season, the team lost to rival Michigan. Announced in mid-February, Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh signed a new five-year contract worth slightly over $7 million this year, which extends through the 2026 season.

According to the press release, Day’s program has also experienced four straight semesters with a team total GPA of at least 3.0. Fourteen players in the 2022 squad have already received their diplomas.
Additionally, Ohio State announced new contracts for women’s basketball coach Kevin Mcguff and men’s basketball coach Chris Holtmann on Wednesday. Holtmann’s contract will be extended for another three years, through the 2027–2028 campaign. His base salary of $1 million per year was boosted by $500,000, bringing his total yearly income to $3.5 million.
Over the last five seasons, Holtmann has guided the Buckeyes to at least 20 victories and a trip to the NCAA tournament each of those years. Kansas and Oregon are the other two Power 5 institutions that have won 20 games in each of the last five seasons, including Ohio State.
