The decision made earlier this month by starting quarterback Kyle McCord to depart the program may have been the most shocking setback for any club in the nation regarding the Ohio State Buckeyes and the NCAA Transfer Portal.

And it seems that the reasons he chose to depart have now finally been revealed.

The Colombus Dispatch said that McCord’s two primary motivations for quitting the program were his desire for more money through NIL and his uncertainty about starting for the club in 2024.

Despite having a mixed season in 2023, McCord finished 14th in the nation in terms of quarterback rating after completing 65.8 percent of his throws for 3,170 yards and 24 touchdowns with just six interceptions. Along with an 11-1 regular season, he guided the Buckeyes to a No. 7 College Football Playoff ranking.

Nevertheless, the inconsistencies in the last stretch cast doubt on his future, and the Junior was unwilling to take that chance given that the Buckeyes were reportedly looking for a new quarterback through the portal.

Regarding the NIL funds, McCord apparently wanted the program to commit to a larger payout. McCord finally decided to move on, though, because the school was unable to yield on that point.

McCord is reportedly expected to settle with the Syracuse Orange of the ACC, so it looks like he could be moving to the East Coast.

The Buckeyes will now conduct their search through the portal or possibly from within the program in Devin Brown, Lincoln Kienholz, or incoming freshman Air Nolan.
