Ohio State football: New offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien reportedly set to leave program.

After less than a month on the job, Bill O’Brien is reportedly planning to quit Ohio State. He will take a head coaching post at Boston College in lieu of serving as the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach this season.

Day stated last week that he needed an offensive replacement so he could concentrate on the responsibilities of managing a collegiate football program.

O’Brien’s lengthy tenure as an NFL offensive coach and head coach made him intriguing, but it’s unclear how Day will succeed him.

Day stated this week that he has backup plans ready, but losing O’Brien could have a cascading effect on how he fills an already vacant position on the coaching staff.The name Chip Kelly has been mentioned a lot.

He is still the head coach at UCLA, but there are a number of reports that suggest he has tried to find other employment.

The most prominent of these came from West Coast veteran reporter Jon Wilner, who while not confirming every rumor regarding Kelly’s desire to leave Westwood, did provide an explanation for why it may make sense:

That implies that if the Bruins struggle in their first Big Ten season, Kelly’s seat might get considerably hotter in a few months, and firing him wouldn’t cost the school nearly as much.

Day was Kelly’s quarterback at New Hampshire when Kelly was the offensive coordinator, so the two had a close relationship.

Before moving to Ohio State in 2017, Day worked as an assistant on Kelly’s NFL teams in Philadelphia and San Francisco.

Kelly led Oregon to victory during his four-year tenure as head coach from 2009 to 2012. He elevated the Ducks to a new level with an uptempo, spread offense that upset the Pac 12 during the latter end of Pete Carroll’s USC dynasty, building on what his predecessor Mike Bellotti had started in Eugene.
