METAIRIE, La. (WVUE) – Two toddler girls drowned Sunday (June 16) in a community swimming pool of a Metairie apartment complex, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
The tragedy occurred in a swimming pool at the Lemon Tree Apartments, in the 4900 block of Zenith Street, authorities said.
Emergency dispatchers received a call about the unresponsive children shortly before 9:55 a.m. Initial reports indicated two young girls had fallen or jumped into a pool.
The Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office on Monday identified the girls as 1-year-old Jahvon Hawkins and 2-year-old Neveah Lanieux. Dr. Gerry Cvintanovich says they were cousins.
Jefferson Parish deputies arrived and began CPR efforts. After paramedics arrived to continue treatment, JPSO deputies formed a rolling blockade of intersections along Causeway Boulevard to accelerate safe transport of the children to Ochsner Medical Center in Jefferson, where they arrived at 10:24 a.m. But there was no indication from authorities they ever regained consciousness.
