Two children under the age of five drowned in backyard pools in the Phoenix area last week. Neither pool had the exterior fencing required by the city of Phoenix.

 

 

 

 

Phoenix Fire spokesperson Capt. Todd Keller confirmed a 3-year-old child died after drowning in a backyard pool in Phoenix on Tuesday morning.

 

 

 

 

Officials said it was unknown how long the child was underwater at the residence near Cactus Road and 64th Street.

 

 

 

 

Homeowners in Phoenix are required to have a fence or wall around the pool that is at least 5 feet tall and self-latching, with some pools requiring an interior barrier as well. The city’s pool policy states there are no exceptions for the exterior fencing requirement.

On Thursday night, a 4-year-old boy died in a hospital after drowning in a Scottsdale backyard pool near 73rd and Cypress streets, which police confirmed did not have a fence around it. The drowning took place at a short-term rental home.

All single-family homes built in Scottsdale after July 20, 1995, are required to have a barrier around the pool that separates it from the rest of the property and that is at least 4 feet tall. This policy is not retroactive.

 

 

 

 

In 2024, 16 children under the age of 5 died from drowning in Maricopa County, according to reports from Children’s Safety Zone.
