So sad news: 6 Runner dies at today Brooklyn competition Half marathon and few of them hospitalized in……

FWIW this has been one of the hottest BK half’s in the last few years and I’ve been running it since  Less seasoned runners do not necessarily know how to read their body’s distress signals which can be a dangerous combo when perceived heat is incorrect and you have the excitement of wanting to run a PR.

People do however, sometimes die from cardiac arrest at long endurance events and it is difficult to know for sure what exact combo of bad elements caused that unfortunate death. I’ve heard of runners dying at full marathons with ideal weather conditions, so it is always a risk that is there regardless of temps.

May he Rest In Peace. The rest of you all that ran and finished, remember to continue to hydrate and recover! I ran one a solid minute slower per mile than normal because I wanted to finish with a smile and enjoy my time, and I have zero regrets eating some humble pie and scaling things back today.

Doesn’t even have to be a long event. My dad died of cardiac arrest while out on a shorter

Saw someone who was probably him (given reported 8:40-45 time) drop to the floor in front of me right at the finish line. Was hoping I’d get home to not read this in the news… so sad. May he rest in peace.

Also heard more than a few people at the start saying the weather was ‘good’/’surprisingly good’. Makes no sense to say it when humidity is at 90%. Wish more people would be aware of this and take it seriously – even as the organization reported on the dangerous conditions yesterday.

So much this. It was cooler than expected this morning but 100% humidity on my app. I actually don’t like doing organized runs that much but wanted to finally do the marathon next year so doing 9+1 this year, so ended up still running. I popped some electrolyte pills and went 2 for 1 Gatorade to water, with water on head neck and back. About halfway through I started pulling way back since I was heating up and didn’t want to push. But I was sweating well and felt fine. My wife who was running with me was like “I don’t think it’s that bad, I’m barely even sweating.” I’m like okay, fuck this, I’m going to pull back even more as going down the long straight stretch. She likes organized runs more so may not even realized how hot she actually was
