Kyle Van Noy is on a mission, and quarterbacks are feeling the impact. Heading into Week 5, he ranks second in the NFL with six sacks, standing out as a crucial piece of Baltimore’s defense. In the Ravens’ 35-10 win over the Buffalo Bills, Van Noy recorded two sacks for the third straight game, pursuing star quarterback Josh Allen with relentless pressure. This marks only the second time in Ravens history that a player has achieved multiple sacks in three consecutive games, joining Justin Houston (2022). With 15 sacks over 18 games as a Raven, Van Noy, at age 33, is proving he still has plenty left in the tank.
Reflecting on his journey, Van Noy shared, “I take it very personally that I wasn’t on a team at the start of last year. Every season, I’m out to prove I can still play at a high level. I have goals and dreams that drive me, and I’ve felt underrated my entire career, so I’m just going to keep working.”
Initially unsigned when the 2023 season began, Van Noy felt overlooked until the Ravens brought him on board on September 27. Since joining the team, he’s been on a mission to demonstrate he’s still at his best. Baltimore has provided the ideal environment for him, from the culture and coaching to the support of his teammates. Even established players like All-Pro linebacker Roquan Smith respect his skill and experience. “I’m so excited for KVN,” said Smith. “He’s a smart vet who knows the moves to make against each tackle. The scheme really suits him. People slept on him, but let them keep sleeping.”
Van Noy’s presence was critical in the Ravens’ victory over Buffalo, highlighted by a strip sack of Allen on a trick play in the third quarter. The Bills, trailing 21-10 and pushing downfield, attempted a direct snap to wide receiver Curtis Samuel, who then pitched to Allen. But Van Noy was ready, forcing a fumble that Kyle Hamilton recovered. “I almost felt disrespected that they tried that,” Van Noy said on “The Pat McAfee Show.” The Ravens capitalized on the turnover with a touchdown drive, putting them up 28-10 and sealing their strongest win of the season.
More than just accumulating stats, Van Noy is making pivotal plays that are helping the Ravens (2-2) rebound after a slow start. “He’s playing young and smart,” said Head Coach John Harbaugh. “He’s in the right spots and playing like a true vet.”
At this stage, Van Noy is motivated by more than his previous achievements, including two Super Bowl wins with the Patriots. He’s eager to win a championship with the Ravens and contribute to an organization that has faith in him. He’s also setting an example for younger players with his words and his performance. “I care about these guys,” Van Noy said. “They’ll always be a part of me after I’m done playing. I want to pass the baton and give them support. I work hard to be a good teammate and give back.”
Another inspiration for Van Noy is his daughter, who’s now old enough to appreciate his role on the field. As a young father, he’s energized and hates being called “old.” “Harbaugh and Zach Orr (Defensive Coordinator) have been amazing in helping me grow as a leader and building my confidence,” Van Noy said. “But that chip on my shoulder? It’s here to stay.”
