Sunderland announces Tony Mowbray’s resignation.

Tony Mowbray, Sunderland’s head coach, has decided to part ways with him.

In their first season back in the Championship, the Black Cats made it to the playoffs last year; however, they were defeated by eventual champions Luton Town in the semifinals.

Following the setback, there were whispers that the club’s management was considering a move before deciding to continue with Mowbray.

But that almost-miss with consecutive promotions appears to have stopped Sunderland cold; the North East team has had a patchy 2023–24 campaign thus far.

They had eight losses and three games without a win since the international break, despite having 27 points from 19 games and being in ninth place in the championship standings.

Mowbray was ousted from the dugout on Monday night after the team managed just one point from its three games against Millwall, Huddersfield Town, and Plymouth Argyle.

On the official club website, Leicester City’s sporting director stated: “Everyone at SAFC has really enjoyed working with Tony, and our players, staff, and supporters hold him in the highest respect.”

“He led us to the Sky Bet Championship playoffs and was instrumental in our team’s development after joining us at a difficult moment. Though it was not an easy choice to make, we believed that now was the correct time to act since we are committed to our goal and our plan.

“We will continue to support our coaching staff and players throughout the interim while we concentrate on finding the ideal candidate.”

After overseeing 65 games, Mowbray leaves the Stadium of Light with 26 victories, 18 draws, and 21 losses throughout all competitions.
