Following his formal announcement as the new head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Kalen DeBoer set about organizing his squad for the next season, taking over for longtime head coach Nick Saban.

In a recent interview, DeBoer talked about his initial actions upon starting his new work with Dan Patrick.

DeBoer stated, “I’m meeting with the team and really trying to get in front of them.” “The insane nature of collegiate athletics, especially with the gateway, made me want to make sure people understood who I was at that specific moment. I moved in front of them as soon as I touched down.” (1:10)

Any new coach’s first goal upon joining a new squad should be getting to know the players and making a strong impression on them that they are the new coach and the outgoing coach is gone.

It could have been hard for Alabama to embrace DeBoer as the new coach because everyone had become accustomed to Nick Saban, the team’s 17-year head coach and six-time national champion.

DeBoer, who led the Washington Huskies to the national title this season, could have been phased out by this. It’s not an easy task to follow in the footsteps of one of the greatest college football coaches ever, but this was one of the factors that drew him to the Alabama position.

DeBoer has seen a lot of Alabama starters, backups, and prospects use the transfer portal to get out of Alabama during this time. Although the new head coach is certain that his club is strong, this was a setback for him.

They have a solid recruiting class, something DeBoer plans to maintain in his time as coach, and have been able to retain several of their starters, including quarterback Jalen Milroe.
