Following a 4-1 loss to Brighton, players from Crystal Palace argue with fans.
After the Eagles’ humiliating 4-1 loss to bitter rivals Brighton & Hove Albion, defender Joachim Andersen and several Crystal Palace players got into heated arguments with the opposing crowd, who were incensed at the Eagles’ on-field performance.
After captain Lewis Dunk blasted home the first goal three minutes in, Brighton cruised to a rather easy day of Premier League football. Dunk rose above his man with a forceful header.
Jack Hinshelwood and Facundo Buonanotte, who scored in the 33rd and 34th minutes, respectively, worsened the situation for the visitors, while Jean-Philippe Mateta added a late consolation in the 71st.
With six minutes remaining in normal time, Joao Pedro’s well-executed finish at the Amex Stadium sealed the victory.
Referee Simon Hooper’s full-time whistle signalled the beginning of it all as Andersen, in the thick of it, faced the enraged Palace supporters.
Joachim Andersen addresses enraged Palace supporters
The manager’s assistant had to force him to go aside.
As previously indicated, unsettling images emerged from the away end of the stadium as the Palace players—led by captain Andersen, who had assisted Mateta’s goal earlier in the game—went over to thank and clap with their supporters. However, they were welcomed, predictably, with a torrent of expletives from the spectators.
Throughout the afternoon, Roy Hodgson’s team was never better than second best against Roberto De Zerbi’s seasoned team, and the score line accurately reflects the mood around Selhurst Park circles right now. Social media footage has surfaced of Andersen quarrelling with the enthusiastic fans before assistant manager Paddy McCarthy dragged him away from the mayhem.
