Fourteen athletes represented the UAE at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, but none were able to secure a medal. To date, the UAE has only won two Olympic medals: a gold by Ahmed Al Maktoum in shooting at the 2004 Athens Games and a bronze by Sergiu Toma in judo at the 2016 Rio Games.
The UAE has been vocal about its desire to grow as an international sporting power and enhance its Olympic performance. On Thursday, Faris Mohammed Al Mutawa, Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee (NOC), held a meeting with the Olympic Clubs Committee in Dubai to discuss strategies for promoting the Olympic movement and expanding competitive sports in the UAE.
Key topics included increasing participation from private clubs, addressing challenges faced by sports organizations, and exploring ways to enhance players’ awareness in areas like behavior, health, and doping. Development strategies were proposed, and Khalaf Salem Al Wahidi was appointed spokesperson for the Olympic Clubs Committee. Additionally, Yousef Mirza will design a questionnaire to assess challenges faced by UAE sports clubs.
The meeting also emphasized the creation of an integrated digital platform that would consolidate data on UAE athletes, providing detailed profiles for better preparation and analysis by technical teams.
Spokesperson Al Yamahi stated that the NOC’s Clubs Committee aims to implement innovative strategies to improve athlete performance and expand the sports base, aligning with national objectives. The committee also plans to introduce specialized programs to enhance the skills of national trainers.
