LAKE MURRAY, S.C. (WBKO/Gray News) – A collegiate bass fisherman died after a boat crash on Lake Murray in South Carolina.

 

Western Kentucky University student Johnathan Brian, 21, was identified as one of the occupants of a boat that crashed on Jan. 25, according to Newberry County coroner Laura Kneece.

 

Brian died at Prisma Health Richland early Tuesday morning.

Brian was a member of the WKU Bass Fishing Team, according to Dr Jace Lux, WKU’s Public Information Officer. The accident happened the day before he was expected to fish in the Lake Murray Bassmaster College fishing tournament.

 

Authorities believe the crash happened during a practice run before the tournament.

 

“This week, we lost a valuable member of the WKU family. Our thoughts are with Johnathan Brian’s family, loved ones and friends, and we extend our deepest condolences to them,” Lux said. “His fishing partner was also injured in the accident, and we wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to his return to campus.”

 

Newberry County Coroner’s Office along with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is investigating the incident.
