Rooney took over as manager of Blackburn Rovers when ustace was fired in October. Rooney, however, was only able to play in 15 games.
With five games remaining, the Blues are in the Championship relegation zone after dropping from sixth to twentieth place under Rooney.
Wagner, who assumed leadership in July, stated during a press conference, “We made one decision that, if we were to go back in time, we wouldn’t have made.”
The American came in Birmingham on Tuesday to make the announcement that the team will be moving from St Andrew’s to a new stadium. Nine months ago, Knighthead Capital purchased a 45.64% interest from Birmingham Sports International Holdings.
According to Wagner, the entire Sports Quarter project will come with a £2–3bn price tag.
“We made one decision [in firing Eustace] that wasn’t perfect in the context of having made thousands of decisions for the club this season,” he stated.
“While we must maintain some background, the future is still open to us. For the remainder of the season, we are still very optimistic.”
Before Manchester United and England great Rooney was controversially selected to replace Eustace at the beginning of the season, the player had won five of his eleven league games.
Rooney played for 83 days and lost nine of his 15 games. Tony Mowbray took over as interim manager after Steve Spooner lost his first game, and he won four of the next ten games before taking a sick leave.
After that, Mark Venus, his assistant, took over as manager for six games, and Gary Rowett took over as interim manager until the end of the season.
Prior to Cardiff City’s visit on Wednesday, Rowett has only won one of his three games in charge.
“There were some good lessons learned with some of the decisions we’ve made this year,” Wagner stated.
Significant insights have been gained regarding our cognitive processes when making critical decisions in sports.
“The ability to select the appropriate players is a must.
“In the nine months that we have owned the team, we have positioned ourselves to increase income in the upcoming season by 100%.
“So, irrespective of where we are, we will be a powerhouse from a revenue perspective and that will give us enormous flexibility in future transfer windows.”
Wagner’s remarks coincided with the Blues’ announcement that they would be moving by August 2029 into their planned Sports Quarter. Tom Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl winner, is another minority shareholder in the team.
